The Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has vowed to restore the failed sections of the East West Road between Ahoada and Ula-Okobo town in Rivers State, following an inspection of the deplorable conditions by Managing Director Dr. Samuel Ogbuku.

“The situation is deplorable, and we are shocked at the level of devastation,” Dr. Ogbuku said, pledging collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Works to commence remedial action immediately.

The NDDC had previously engaged SETRACO to undertake remedial works on the damaged sections after the 2022 flood.

Dr. Ogbuku assured that the Commission would complement the efforts of the construction company working for the Federal Ministry of Works to urgently fix the failed sections.

“As an interventionist agency, we shall compliment the efforts of both the Federal and State Governments by taking measures to ease the stress commuters face on a daily basis,” he said.

Project Manager Engr. Kingsley Oyeama described the damage as extensive but assured that the company would take necessary measures to make the road motorable in the shortest possible time.

Ijaw Youth Council President Sir Jonathan Lokpobiri thanked NDDC for responding promptly and appealed to the Federal Government to prioritize the repair of the East-West Road, noting its strategic importance linking the South-East, South-South, and South-West regions.

A truck driver stuck at Okobo narrated the ordeal of motorists and passengers, citing numerous accidents and hours-long traffic jams. “The East-West Road has become a nightmare,” he lamented.
