A newly-wed couple, Yaryna Arieva and Sviatoslav Fursin, have gotten attention on social media after spending their first day of marriage collecting rifles to defend their country, Ukraine.

The couple tied the knot few hours before Russian military invaded their country on Thursday morning, February 24.

Instead of going for their honeymoon, they went straight to the armory to collect rifles issued by the Ukrainian ministry of defence to men and women willing to fight for Ukraine.

The newly-weds said they were planning to get married in May 2022 but decided to move up the date because they were not sure what the future holds for them.

They have now signed up with the Territorial Defense Forces, a branch of Ukraine’s military made up of mostly volunteers.

Speaking with local media, Arieva said, “Right now, we are here and we are doing everything we can. So there is a lot of work to do, but still, I hope everything will be OK,”
