  • Nigeria ranks 3rd in Africa in the 2025 Global Firepower Index, behind Egypt and Algeria, reflecting improvements in defense capability and counter-terrorism efforts.

  • Nigeria placed 31st globally, ahead of South Africa (40th) and Ethiopia (52nd), signaling its growing influence in regional military strength.

Nigeria has been ranked the third most powerful military force in Africa, according to the 2025 Global Firepower Military Strength Index, as reported by PUNCH Online on Monday.

The Global Firepower Index assesses the military capabilities of 145 countries using over 60 criteria, including troop size, equipment strength, financial resources, logistics, and geographical factors.

In the latest rankings, Egypt retains the top spot on the continent, followed by Algeria in second place. Nigeria’s move up to third position reflects ongoing improvements in its defense structure, particularly in personnel development, acquisition of modern equipment, and intensified counter-terrorism efforts. South Africa placed fourth in Africa, while Ethiopia secured the fifth position.

Nigeria’s improved standing in the index signals a strengthened military presence on the continent and a growing focus on defense readiness.

Edo Police Arrest Man Over Death of Missing 21-Year-Old

The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of a 31-year-old man, Joshua Osaigbovo, in connection with the death of 21-year-old Osato Edogiaweria, whose decomposing remains were found in a shallow grave.
