Nigeria Wins 4x400m Gold at World Athletics U-20 Championship

Team Nigeria won gold in the 4×400 mixed relay at the ongoing U-20 World Athletics Championships on Wednesday.

The team comprising of Johnson Nnamani, Ella Onojuvwevwo, Opeyemi Oke, and Bamidele Ajayi had set a national record time of 3:21.66 to claim Heat 2, to qualify for the final showdown.

They further set a new Championship record to win the country’s first-ever gold at the competition with 3:19.70.

The team overcame Poland (3:19.80) and India (3:20.60) to make history as the first winners of the event at the World U20 Championship.

Recall that Team Nigeria had a gloomy display at the Tokyo Olympics just over a week ago, with only two medals won for the most populous black nation.

Blessing Oburududu of Bayelsa state won silver at wrestling events, while Ese Brume of Delta state took home the bronze medal in long jump.
