Police in Erode, Tamil Nadu, India, have arrested a 32-year-old Nigerian man named Jones Duro Michael after they found methamphetamine with him worth 15 lakh rupees, which is around ₦27.9 million.

Reliable Tip-Off Leads to Arrest

Michael, who said he’s a footballer, was picked up last Saturday by the Prohibition Enforcement Wing (PEW) close to the Vijayamangalam toll gate.

Inspector Sivahami Rani, who led the arrest, said it happened after they received reliable information.

Expired Passport, No Visa, and Suspected Sea Entry

When police looked deeper into the case, they found that Michael’s passport expired in 2023 and he didn’t have a valid visa or any legal documents to stay in India.

They believe he may have sneaked into the country through the sea.

> “His documents were not in order. There’s strong reason to believe he came in through unauthorized means,” said Inspector Rani.

Charges and Detention

Michael is now being held in Coimbatore Central Prison by court order.

He’s been charged under the NDPS Act and the Foreigners Act for having illegal drugs and staying in India without proper documents.

Landlord Also in Trouble

At the same time, the police also arrested a 49-year-old man named Melvin from Perundurai.

He was taken in for renting out his house to Michael without checking who he was or if his documents were valid.

Importance of Proper Tenant Checks

Officials stressed that landlords must check who their tenants are and confirm their papers to avoid getting into trouble with the law.

Growing Issues with Drugs and Illegal Immigration

This case highlights the growing problem of drug smuggling and people entering India without permission.

Jones Michael’s arrest is another example of foreign nationals being caught as India continues to fight drug crimes and illegal immigration.

India Steps Up Security

Indian officials are tightening borders and improving local policing to stop these crimes and keep the country safe.

Police are stepping up their watch and are asking the public to report anything suspicious right away.

What’s your opinion about this arrest? Do you believe the authorities are doing enough to stop drug smuggling and illegal entry?
