The influx of fake drugs and unwholesome food products in Nigeria has become a major concern, posing a significant threat to the health and well-being of citizens.

According to experts, the consumption of fake drugs and food products can lead to treatment failures, adverse reactions, food poisoning, and even death.

Dr. Lolu Ojo, a consultant pharmacist, warned that fake drugs may contain little to no active ingredients or harmful substances like mercury, arsenic, rat poison, or cement.

“A drug is prescribed at a particular dose, frequency, and duration to exert a therapeutic effect. When any of these parameters is missing, it could result in treatment failure,” he said.

Menahwile, The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has been working to combat the menace, but experts say more needs to be done to strengthen regulatory frameworks and enforcement.

Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, the Director General of NAFDAC, identified dearth of manpower as part of the challenges facing the agency in manning the land borders, seaports, and airports.

“We need people that we have screened before for job placement. There are those on the waitlist until we get statutory approval,” she said.

NAFDAC seizes N5bn Worth Of Counterfeit Rice In Nasarawa

Yet again, the operatives of the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC have intercepted another counterfeit goods.

The agency seized bags of rice worth billions of naira, shutting down eight rice shops and a warehouse in the process in the Karu Local Government Area of Nasarawa State.
