Nigerians will soon begin to process and receive Nigerian passports from the comfort of their homes, without the hassle of physically appearing to be processed at a passport processing centre.

The Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the new strategy at a stakeholders’ forum where the contactless passport processing App was unfolded in Abuja on Friday.

The minister announced that with effect from April next year, passport production will be centralized in Nigeria as no immigration attaché in any foreign mission would be allowed to approve visa issuance.

According to Tunji-Ojo, “The contactless passport processing project is designed to reduce errors, enhance security, and make the process more convenient and efficient.

Applicants can now apply and receive their passports from the comfort of their homes, without the hassle of physical appearance.”

The Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Mrs. Kemi Nandep, added that “The move is part of our efforts to strengthen the security of the Nigerian passport and make it more accessible to citizens. We are committed to making the process seamless and convenient for all applicants.”

The contactless passport processing project is a joint effort between two Nigerian firms, Irish Smart Technology and New World, and has been test-run for nine months.
