NLC Dismisses 35% Pay Rise for Civil Servants

NLC, TUC Gives Govs Ultimatum on N35k Minimum Wage

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has dismissed the federal government’s announcement of a 25-35 per cent pay rise for civil servants across various consolidated salary structures, calling it “a waste of time.”

According to NLC Assistant General Secretary Chris Onyeka, the National Salaries, Incomes, and Wages Commission (NSIWC) lacked the authority to set the national minimum wage, rendering the announcement meaningless.

Onyeka stressed that the move has no significance for the NLC and federal civil servants.

What they pretend to have done is a waste of time. It does not amount to anything for us and those in the federal civil service.”

However, Emmanuel Njoku, Head of Press at NSIWC, clarified that the increment is distinct from the multi-stakeholder committee led by Secretary to the Government of the Federation Senator George Akume.

Njoku assured that the government will pay arrears from January 2024.
