The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has directed its affiliates and all workers across the country to prepare for a nationwide shutdown if the Nigerian Police arrest Congress President Joe Ajaero.
The NLC convened an emergency National Executive Council (NEC) meeting at the Labour House to address the situation, following the police invitation extended to Ajaero for questioning over allegations including terrorism financing.
NLC Deputy President Kabiru Ado Sani informed the assembled workers that the Congress would seek an extension of time from the police to consult with its lawyers. He emphasized that the invitation to Ajaero was seen as an invitation to the entire workforce.

Sani stated, “As a committed labour center, we are abiding by the rule of law and due process. We will honor the police invitation but are requesting more time for legal consultations. However, this does not legitimize the charges against our Congress leadership.”
He also announced that if Ajaero is arrested or detained, the NLC will call for a nationwide strike. “We put our affiliates on red alert to mobilize workers to down tools if our Congress President is arrested,” Sani said.
