The leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has been moved from the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) in Abuja to a correctional facility in Sokoto State, following his sentencing for terrorism.

His legal counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, confirmed the development on Thursday via a post on X, saying the transfer places Kanu far from his legal team and family members.

The transfer comes a day after Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, found Kanu guilty of multiple terrorism-related charges. The IPOB leader received life imprisonment on counts one, four, five and six of the seven-count charge, alongside additional sentences of 20 years and five years on counts three and seven.

In his judgment, Justice Omotosho ruled that the prosecution had established all allegations against Kanu beyond reasonable doubt. He said Kanu failed to provide a credible defence and “deliberately refused” to challenge the evidence presented by the Federal Government.

The judge described Kanu as “a person who cannot be allowed to remain in the company of sane minds,” calling him an “international terrorist.” He added that Kanu’s conduct in court demonstrated violent tendencies, making him unsuitable for the Kuje Correctional Centre.

Omotosho further ordered that Kanu must not be allowed to use any electronic device, including mobile phones, unless under the direct supervision of the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA). Items recovered from him — including a smuggled transmitter — were ordered forfeited to the Federal Government.
