The Nigeria Premier Football League, NPFL, wants to install Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology but lacks the cash to do so.

NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye said that the league is still on the lookout for sponsors who can pay for the VAR equipment as well as training.

“We are ready to go the VAR way but these machines are expensive, and officials must be trained to use them effectively.” – said Elegbeleye.

Several questionable decisions have gone a long way in shaking the confidence of fans in the league.

NPFL Chairman Gbenga Elegbeleye speaking about the moves for VAR and supports.

Although Elegbeleye lauded Nigerian referees as “among the best in the world,” he insisted that VAR was now necessary for fairness.

To this end, NPFL introduced communication devices for referees in the 2024/25 season.

“You do not always have to run to the screen; through communication, the referee actually gets real-time support from the VAR team,” he added.

To get the system off the ground, the Nigeria Football Federation sent ten tech-savvy referees to Morocco for VAR training.

Meanwhile, the NPFL officials have been meeting online with VAR suppliers to finalize installation plans as soon as sponsors come on board.

The NPFL board decided to start the 2025–2026 season on August 22 despite having little funds.

The league’s speed at obtaining sponsorship will determine if VAR is operational by then.
