Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has expressed grave concern over the dilapidated conditions of schools in the state, following his inspection of several educational institutions on Wednesday.
Okpebholo, accompanied by the Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Paddy Iyamu, and other senior government officials, visited schools in Oredo Local Government Area, including Eweka Primary School, Oroma Primary School, Amagba Secondary School, and Uyiosa Primary School.
During the inspection, Okpebholo was visibly disappointed by the poor sanitary conditions, security concerns, and the overall neglect of the educational structures.
He specifically criticized the EdoBEST initiative, a state government education reform program, which he claimed had failed to improve the learning environment for students.

“Look at the situation of this school; it is terrible, and this is the so-called EdoBEST,” Okpebholo said during his visit to Eweka Primary School.
He added, “This is not acceptable. My administration will fix this school. This school must be fenced, and work will begin immediately. By next Friday, I will be here to assess the progress.”
The governor pledged that his administration would take swift action to improve the condition of schools in the state, with plans to provide better facilities, including security, fences, and more qualified teachers.

He further vowed to rectify the mistakes of the previous administration and ensure a conducive learning environment for Edo children.
“We will rebuild schools, provide security, and fence those without fences. Those encroaching on school lands must desist,” he stated, emphasizing his commitment to transforming the education sector in line with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Residents of the areas visited expressed their support for the governor’s initiative, hopeful that the changes would bring much-needed improvements to their communities.
