Okpebholo declares: “We will open the books and bring looters to justice”
Edo State Governor, Senator Monday Okpebholo, has vowed to investigate the administration of his predecessor, Mr Godwin Obaseki, accusing him and officials of financial recklessness during his eight-year tenure.
Speaking during a victory parade at the Government House in Benin City on Friday, Okpebholo announced plans to establish a Commission of Inquiry to scrutinise Obaseki’s financial records and government dealings.
“I will open the books to check the financial dealings and how Obaseki governed Edo State in the last eight years,” Okpebholo declared.

He said: “A university in this state received ₦47 million under Obaseki’s administration, yet a consultant was paid ₦51 million. This was not good enough. They wanted to continue with this act, but God helped us to push them out.”
Okpebholo said his administration would interrogate top officials who served under Obaseki to account for their stewardship to Edo people.
“Edo was tired of transactional people and thieves. Now, we will look into their records. We will take two years out of Obaseki’s eight years and Edo people will see the difference,” he said.
Okpebholo also accused the PDP’s governorship candidate, Mr Asue Ighodalo, and his party of stockpiling funds meant for court cases and elections.
“They were looking for judges to bribe or buy, but they could not find any. They kept money for elections and court cases, but God disappointed them,” Okpebholo alleged.
The governor, whose mandate was recently affirmed by the Supreme Court, pledged to take on what he described as an entrenched system of corruption.
“They have finished fighting us. Now, I am ready to fight back and ensure that all those who cheated Edo people in the last eight years are brought to book,” he said.

Deputy Governor Dennis Idahosa commended Okpebholo for steering the party through legal battles, saying it is now time to focus on governance.
Former deputy governor Comrade Philip Shaibu described Okpebholo’s victory as divine, urging Edo citizens to support the APC administration for development.
The Commission of Inquiry is expected to begin work in the coming weeks as tension builds over possible revelations about Obaseki’s administration.
