There are strong indications that major opposition parties in Nigeria are perfecting plans to form a coalition ahead of the 2027 presidential election, in a bid to unseat President Bola Tinubu.

The move is inspired by the recent victories of opposition parties in the United States and Ghana.

According to sources, former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Peter Obi of the Labour Party (LP), and Rabiu Kwankwaso of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) are exploring the possibility of a joint ticket or alliance.

Atiku’s spokesperson, Paul Ibe, confirmed that discussions were ongoing, saying, “The truth of the matter is that Atiku Abubakar has promoted opposition parties to work together, to come together; that is the only way they can kick out this incompetent and clueless government.”

The National Publicity Secretary of the PDP, Debo Ologunagba, expressed optimism about the coalition, stating, “You will see the replica if INEC allows the election to be free and fair. The American and Ghanaian elections reflect the will of the people…”

However, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has dismissed the opposition’s plans as wishful thinking, insisting that President Tinubu’s performance will earn him re-election.

The APC Publicity Secretary in Oyo State, Olawale Sadare, said, “We don’t have any cause to panic. Why should we be frightened by the opposition’s political movements or realignments? They are a bunch of clowns.”
