Tragedy was narrowly avoided on Tuesday when a truck transporting timber materials crashed at the Umuahia Timber Market while attempting to enter the premises.
The accident occurred as the long vehicle tried to negotiate its way through a dilapidated entrance point into the market. The truck lost balance and toppled over, causing its heavy timber load to spill onto nearby tricycles and stalls, destroying food items and other property.
Thankfully, no lives were lost in the incident.

Eyewitnesses and affected traders, including Mrs. Helen Onwuegbu and Oluchi Asoha, expressed gratitude to God for sparing their lives. Despite the damage to goods and property, they were relieved that the crash did not result in fatalities.
The traders attributed the accident to the poor road conditions within and around the market, worsened by persistent flooding in the Umuahia Industrial Market area.
Confirming the incident, President of the Umuahia Timber Industrial Market, Mr. Luke Anozie Ufomadu, and Chairman of the Building Materials Section, Mr. Onyemechi Ndu, acknowledged the damage and thanked God for preventing loss of life.
They used the opportunity to call on the Abia State Government to urgently address the infrastructure challenges facing the market. The market leaders specifically appealed to Governor Alex Otti to extend his administration’s ongoing infrastructural development to the Umuahia Industrial Market by repairing the dilapidated roads and overhauling the drainage systems to mitigate flooding during the rainy season.
