A boat transporting passengers and goods to Kwata, Zumba Market in Niger State has capsized, leaving an unknown number of people feared dead.
The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, July 26, 2025, at approximately 11:45 a.m., according to the Niger State Emergency Management Agency (NSEMA). Rescue operations are currently underway, but the full extent of the casualties remains unclear.
Dr. Ibrahim Hussaini, NSEMA’s Director of Information and Special Duties, confirmed the incident in a statement issued on behalf of the agency’s Director General, Abdullahi Baba Arah.

He stated, “NSEMA has received a report of a boat mishap incident which occurred today, 26th July 2025, around 11:45 am when a boat loaded with commodities and an unspecified number of passengers heading to Kwata, Zumba Market, capsized along with its occupants.”
Hussaini further disclosed that some of the passengers, including the boat operator, were rescued. One of the survivors has been admitted to the General Hospital in Kuta and is currently receiving medical care.
He added, “As at the time of filling this report, the number of casualties could not be confirmed.”
Efforts to locate more survivors or recover bodies are ongoing. According to NSEMA, search and rescue activities are being carried out by the agency’s desk officers in collaboration with local divers and community volunteers.

Joy, a student of the Department of Human Kinetics, was reportedly murdered on Tuesday, but her decomposing body was only found over the weekend following a foul odour that raised suspicion among her neighbours.
