•Factional Tensions Erupt as NWC Faces Leadership Shake-Up

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is engulfed in escalating turmoil, stemming from a fierce clash between the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed.

The strife has resulted in a significant factional split within the party’s National Working Committee (NWC), as confirmed by sources.

Since the removal of Senator Iyorchia Ayu, acting National Chairman Umar Damagum has faced intense scrutiny and calls for resignation, particularly after contentious PDP Congresses in Rivers State were authorized under his leadership.

The recent postponement of the National Executive Committee meeting, originally set for September 26, has further fueled discontent among party members.

The conflict reached a boiling point on August 24 when PDP governors openly backed the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, leading Wike to threaten disruptions in their states should they persist in meddling with Rivers affairs.

The governors’ response labeled Wike’s threats as “irresponsible.”

In a surprising turn of events, the NWC suspended National Publicity Secretary Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser Kamaldeen Ajibade, both of whom have been vocal critics of Damagum’s leadership and Wike’s influence over party matters.

A statement from the NWC indicated that a committee has been established to investigate the suspensions.

In a reactionary statement, Ologunagba confirmed that the NWC had also moved to suspend Damagum and National Secretary Sen. Samuel Anyanwu, citing allegations of disloyalty and anti-party activities.

The NWC condemned their actions, particularly their involvement in a legal matter concerning former members of the Rivers State House of Assembly.

Following the upheaval, Alhaji Yayari Ahmed Mohammed has been appointed as the acting National Chairman.

The rift within the NWC reflects a deeper division, primarily driven by the conflict between Wike and Fubara over control of the party structure in Rivers State.

The PDP Board of Trustees has called for unity, urging all factions to reconcile their differences and prioritize the party’s stability moving forward.

Chairman Sen. Adolphus Wabara emphasized the necessity for peace and collaboration within the party as it navigates these turbulent times.
