PFA Monitors Chelsea ‘Bomb Squad’ Tactic Amid FIFA Guidance

Chelsea

The Professional Football Association (PFA) is closely monitoring the use of “bomb squads” by clubs, a tactic where players deemed surplus to requirements are excluded from the main squad, according to Sky Sports News.

Chelsea, for example, has instructed Raheem Sterling, Trevor Chalobah, and Ben Chilwell to train separately from the first team after manager Enzo Maresca deemed them unnecessary. In total, at least 13 players have been removed from Maresca’s squad.

FIFA has issued guidance to all clubs regarding player treatment, and the PFA is keeping an eye on the situation. FIFA’s 2022 statutes provide regulations on player status, transfers, and protections, with a focus on employment law rather than specific league rules.
