Pope Mourns Nigeria Attack Victims, Urges Stronger Protection

Pope Leo XIV has expressed deep sorrow over the recent wave of violent attacks in parts of Nigeria, calling on authorities to step up efforts to protect lives and property.

In a message posted on X on Sunday, the Pope said he was saddened by reports of deadly assaults in Kwara, Katsina and Benue states, which have left many people dead, homes destroyed and communities displaced.

“It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria, leading to a heavy loss of life,” the Pontiff wrote.
“I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism and hope that the authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety of every citizen.”

The Pope’s message comes amid growing security concerns across the country. In Kwara State, gunmen attacked Woro village, burning shops and setting fire to the residence of a traditional ruler, forcing residents to flee into nearby bushes.

In Katsina State, more than 20 people were reportedly killed when suspected bandits stormed Doma community in Faskari Local Government Area, opening fire before escaping.

Meanwhile, in Benue State, security operatives repelled an attack on Anwase village in Kwande Local Government Area. Although no deaths were recorded, several houses were destroyed during the incident.

The renewed violence has continued to raise questions about security and the safety of vulnerable communities across Nigeria.
