Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is reportedly preparing to resign from the cabinet of Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The planned resignation follows a directive by President Tinubu requiring all ministers, aides, and political appointees seeking elective office to step down on or before March 31, 2026, in line with provisions of the Electoral Act.

Adelabu, who has declared his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship election in 2027, is said to be ready to leave office before the deadline.

A source within the Ministry of Power confirmed the development, stating:

“He is ready to bow out. His immediate goal is the Oyo Governorship 2027.”

Efforts to get official confirmation from his spokesperson, Bolaji Tunji, were unsuccessful, as calls and messages were not returned.

Adelabu’s exit may come without achieving the widely discussed 6,000-megawatt electricity supply target, highlighting ongoing challenges in Nigeria’s power sector.

The sector continues to face issues such as:

• Inadequate generation capacity

• Transmission constraints

• Distribution inefficiencies

Sources warn that whoever replaces him will face significant pressure to address these longstanding problems

The development signals early political positioning ahead of the 2027 elections, especially in Oyo State, where Adelabu is expected to be a major contender.
