  • Protesters under the Concerned Citizens Against Corruption (CCAC) stormed the Attorney General’s office in Abuja, demanding a probe into former NNPCL CEO Mele Kyari’s tenure.

  • The group accused Kyari of mismanaging billions of dollars.

Dozens of protesters under the banner of Concerned Citizens Against Corruption (CCAC) on Tuesday stormed the Federal Ministry of Justice in Abuja, calling for an immediate investigation into the former Group Chief Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kyari.

The protesters, led by CCAC Convener Comrade Kabir Matazu, criticized the government’s inaction since President Bola Tinubu sacked Kyari and the NNPCL board on April 2, 2025.

“It is on record that this sack of the erstwhile corrupt leadership of the NNPCL drew applause from Nigerians,” Matazu said.

“Yet, there has been no move to investigate the glaring allegations of corruption that marred his leadership.”Matazu said.

They pointed to controversies over the rehabilitation of government-owned refineries, noting inconsistencies in funding claims and alleged mismanagement.

“In addition to the billions of dollars that the Kyari-led administration claimed to have spent on fixing the refineries, it also claimed Matrix Energy invested $400 million,” Matazu stated, referencing the Port Harcourt Refinery.

The group also raised concern about a reported $2 billion debt owed to Matrix Energy, allegedly being serviced through daily crude allocations without transparency. “Why is the debt being paid with a daily supply of crude oil? Who negotiated this deal, and why are Nigerians being kept in the dark?” Matazu questioned.

They submitted a petition demanding a full judicial review of all agreements signed under Kyari, and called for a commission of inquiry into how contracts for refinery repairs were awarded.

“This investigation should find out how much the Federal Government has lost… and identify what funds to recover and from whom,” the group insisted.
