Invest in coastal fishermen, Seikam charges government, oil companies

A Niger Delta youth leader, Engr Seigha Samson Tamaradeinyefa has charged government at all levels to invest in fishermen domiciled in coastal areas across the golf of Guinea.

Engr Seigha, popularly known as High Chief Seikam, gave the charged while hinging on the need for sustainable peaceful operation in the coastal line.

According to the socialite, “there is no doubt that the Golf of Guinea is one of the dangerous zones for ships as many sea piracy incidents have occurred in recent times.

Engr Seigha stressed that sustainable maritime security starts from the creeks.

“Our fishing rights have been stolen, let’s invest on the local fishermen and women instead of bringing foreign trawlers to catch our fish and destroy our local fishermen nets“.

“Government and its agencies should invest on coastal fishermen, provide necessary fishing materials for the coastal fishermen. By doing that, Gulf of Guinea will be a safe zone for ships and oil installations,” Seigha stressed.

The marine engineer further hinted that the government and oil companies should adopt a comprehensive approach in dealing with maritime security issues by involving youths and coastal communities.

“The government is paying less attention to the coastal communities and it is very bad. No development agencies to develop and reintegrate local coastal fishermen and women.

“The government should provide fishing schemes for coastal communities like the way they are doing for farmers in the north,” he concluded.

Engr Seigha, the Chairman of Ogulagha Kingdom Urban Youths, further charged the federal and state governments to adhere to his recommendations for safe fishing, and oil and gas operation in the Golf of Guinea.
