The Nigerian Senate has charged that all relevant authorities should make sure that the punishment melted out to rapists in the country be stiffened.

The decision was taken on Tuesday by the Senate owing to the incessant increase in the number of rape cases in the country.

While drawing the attention of his colleagues to recent gang-rape and murder of Miss Vera Omozuwa, Senator Sandy Onu moved the motion stronger punishment to rape perpetrators.

The rape and murder of Vera Omozuwa, a 22-year-old micro biology student of the University of Benin had sparked serious rage across the country.

She went into her local church in Benin to utilize the quietness of the church to study and there she was besieged by hoodlums shortly after settling down, she was raped and was hit to death with a fire extinguisher.

The Senate has condemned every act of rape and ordered security agencies to apprehend the perpetrators and bring them to justice and also to enforce the Child Rights Act as it affects the girl-child marriage.

The Federal Government has equally been asked to stage aggressive campaigns against rape in the country.
