The hosts handed Real Madrid their first La Liga defeat of the season.

The loss at Espanyol has completed a poor week for Real Madrid who are yet to win in their last three matches.

Recall that Madrid suffered a surprise loss to Sheriff Tirapsol in the Champions League on Tuesday, and also had a goalless draw in the clash against Villareal in their previous league outing.

Raúl de Tomás, former Real Madrid player opened the scoring when he converted a cross from Adrian Embarba in the first 17 minutes.

The home side who took a 1-0 lead into the half-time break doubled their lead on the hour mark when Vidal dribbled past Nacho to score.

However, Karim Benzema got Madrid back in the game with a clinical finish 11 minutes later.

The visitors would have grabbed an equalizer through Eden Hazard a few minutes before the end of the game, but his goal was ruled offside.

In spite of the defeats, Carlo Ancelotti´s men jointly top the table with defending champions Atletico Madrid, who beat Barcelona 2-0 on Saturday.

Madrid’s defender, Nacho reacted to the match:   “We weren’t comfy. We conceded early and that makes the game tougher for you. They got in behind us a lot, and we need to work on our defensive play and that will come with games.”

“We’ve got a number of players missing, but we still have a good squad and we should be doing better than in our last three games. We need to improve at the back and respond.”
