Nigerian afrobeats star Rema has finally addressed the rumors that he was paid $3 million to perform at the wedding of Mukesh Ambani’s son, Anant Ambani, and Radhika Merchant, the daughter of pharma tycoons Viren and Shaila Merchant.
Rema’s performance at the high-profile wedding on July 12 at the Jio World Centre in Mumbai made headlines. Reports from Hindustan Times claimed he received $3 million to perform his hit song “Calm Down.”
In a recent interview with GRM, Rema was asked about the payment. He responded, “Hehehe. I can’t say much about the money, but the experience was incredible. It was beautifully handled. I love India, and it’s amazing to see how something that was once criticized is now bringing rewards.”

Rema reflected on his journey, saying, “If I had listened to the trolls and changed my sound, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Four years later, it’s paying off, and there’s more to come. India is a huge market, and I might be the first afrobeats artist to tour there, maybe even the first African. It’s not just about the wedding but also the amazing reception everywhere I go. Even when I was just eating out during my tour, the paparazzi were everywhere. The love in India is even bigger than in Nigeria.”
