  • Public hearings to hold across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones in July 2025

  • Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu says amendment process will be people-centred

  • Key focus areas include electoral reforms, fiscal federalism, and gender equity

The House of Representatives Committee on Constitution Review has announced the dates and centres for public hearings across Nigeria’s six geo-political zones.

Deputy Speaker of the House and Chairman of the Committee, Hon. Benjamin Kalu, disclosed the details at a press briefing in Abuja, stressing that the amendment process must reflect the collective will of the people.

He said the hearings would take place in two phases. The first phase, covering the northern zones, will run from Friday, July 11 to Sunday, July 13, 2025, while the second phase for the southern zones is slated for Friday, July 18 to Sunday, July 20, 2025. A national public hearing is scheduled for Monday, July 21, 2025, in Abuja.

In the North Central, hearings will hold in Minna and Lafia. The North West will host sessions in Kaduna and Sokoto, while the North East hearings are scheduled for Gombe and Maiduguri. For the South South, citizens will converge in Yenagoa and Calabar. Enugu and Owerri will serve the South East, while Lagos and Akure will host the South West hearings.

Kalu said the committee had released a simplified compendium of all constitution amendment bills under consideration.

The document outlines key thematic areas such as electoral and judicial reforms, devolution of powers, fiscal federalism, gender equity, local government autonomy, security architecture, and creation of new states.

Calling for active participation, he urged Nigerians—including civil society groups, traditional rulers, youth bodies, and professional associations—not to stay on the sidelines.

“This Constitution belongs to all of us, and together we can shape a document that reflects the true aspirations of our nation,” Kalu said.
