Just two days before the 2023 governorship election in Rivers State, the Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Ahoada West, Onisojin Chuks Festus has joined the party for the main opposition, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

It was gathered that Festus met with Governor Nyesom Wike on Wednesday and made his defection official.

The new PDP member described APC as a “fragmented” party that had no chance in the forthcoming governorship elections.

Speaking to the Christian Association of Nigeria Wike urged CAN to trust him when he asserted that he was in a better position, as a politician, to inform them who among the governorship candidates could do well as the governor of the state.

Wike said this during an interactive session with the leadership and critical stakeholders of CAN, Rivers State chapter, at the Banquet Hall of Government House in Port Harcourt on Tuesday night.

He pointed out that Siminialayi Fubara, the governorship candidate of the PDP, was more sellable among all governorship candidates because he was a technocrat who had risen through the rung of civil service to become the Accountant-General of the State.

According to the governor, Fubara was humble and more disposed to follow in his footsteps with the ongoing development of the State.

The governor explained that Rivers State has not grown at a steady development pace because it has not gotten its transition right and without hitches.

Wike hence urged CAN to pray for a smooth transition that will usher the state into a phase of continuous development, and also support the candidacy of Fubara of their own volition because they want the best for the State.

He said:

“So, the church, this is your own. The way I handed myself over to the church, that is how I’m handing him (Fubara) over to you. Do the same thing you did for me and you will not regret it.

“Spread the gospel to everywhere. Saturday has come. Let our people participate by voting for a quiet and smooth transition in Rivers State.”
