The Sagbama Local Government Area’s team has been crowned winners of the 2023 edition of the Joe Penawou football tournament.
The Bayelsans, who are defending champions of the tournament, edged out host team, Akugbene 2-1 on Saturday to retain the trophy.
The winners were also awarded a cash prize of N1.5 million, while Akugbene received N1 million for their second-place finish.

Bomadi Local Government Area emerged second runners-up to secure a N500,000 cash prize.
The tournament held from March 25 to April 8 and featured 10 teams from Delta and Bayelsa States.
The tourney was sponsored by the Joe Penawou Foundation, an offshoot of oil and gas mogul, Joe Penawou.

According to organizers of the Joe Penawou Foundation, the tournament is aimed at ridding the Niger Delta region of youth restiveness, drug abuse and militancy, while promoting grassroots football and unearthing future stars of the game.
Notable faces at the final ceremony include former Super Eagles striker and coach, Samson Siasia, representatives of the Bayelsa State Government, Delta State Government and the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).
