A mild drama unfolded in the Senate on Wednesday as Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Minority Leader, Senator Abba Moro (PDP, Benue South) clashed over the continuous defection of opposition lawmakers to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The altercation followed the announcement of the defection of Senator Kelvin Chukwu (Enugu East) from the Labour Party (LP) to the APC.

Senator Chukwu, in his letter to the upper chamber, attributed his decision to what he described as the collapse of internal democracy and lack of cohesion within the Labour Party.

Reacting after reading the letter, Senate President Akpabio taunted the opposition, saying he was unbothered by their diminishing numbers.

“If they like, let them all move here. Your decision to leave a tattered house is accepted,” Akpabio said, while urging opposition parties to reorganize themselves, adding that “all political parties are in tatters.”

However, Senator Abba Moro swiftly countered Akpabio’s remarks, cautioning him to remember his constitutional position as a national leader.

“Mr. President, with due respect, you are the Senate President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. No matter the number that are here, we are capable of holding our own,” Moro stated.

The Minority Leader further expressed worry over the rate of defections, saying the Senate chamber was becoming overcrowded with new APC members.Akpabio

“He came here on the Obedient movement, on a sympathy vote, but that’s a story for another day,” Moro added, referring to Senator Chukwu’s election under the Labour Party platform.
