  • Osimhen leads the attack alongside Akor Adams in a two-man strike force
  • Ndidi anchors midfield to protect the back four against Algeria’s attack
  • Onyedika and Moses Simon benched for the AFCON 2025 quarter-final clash

Eric Chelle has officially named his Super Eagles XI vs Algeria, and the Nigeria coach has made a few eye-catching decisions ahead of the AFCON 2025 quarter-final in Marrakech. With Frank Onyeka and Ademola Lookman handed starting roles, while Onyedika and Moses Simon remain on the bench, the Super Eagles are clearly set up to attack while staying solid at the back.

Nigeria arrive at this stage with confidence sky-high after a perfect group-stage run, defeating Tanzania, Tunisia and Uganda to finish top of their group. The Super Eagles then produced their most dominant performance of the tournament in the round of 16, thrashing Mozambique 4-0 in Fes.

Now, a tougher test awaits against an Algerian side that edged past DR Congo after extra time, thanks to a dramatic 119th-minute winner from Adil Boulbina. Algeria have been sharp in Morocco, scoring freely while conceding just once, making this quarter-final a real battle.

In goal, Stanley Nwabali keeps his place after returning against Mozambique. The Chippa United goalkeeper, who was rested earlier due to injury concerns, will be expected to be at his best against Algeria’s dangerous forwards.

The defence remains unchanged, with Semi Ajayi and Calvin Bassey continuing their partnership at centre-back. Bright Osayi-Samuel and Zaidu Sanusi start at right-back and left-back, offering both pace and defensive discipline.

Midfield is where Chelle shows his trust. Wilfred Ndidi and Frank Onyeka sit deep to shield the defence, while Alex Iwobi provides creativity. Ademola Lookman operates just ahead of them, linking midfield to attack and offering goals from deep positions.

Up front, all eyes will be on Victor Osimhen, who partners Akor Adams once again. The duo have impressed with their movement and physical presence, and Chelle believes they can trouble Algeria’s back line.

Speaking ahead of kick-off, Chelle said:

“We respect Algeria, but we believe in our quality. This team has shown hunger, discipline, and unity. Now is the moment to show character.”
