‘Corruption Thriving Under Your Nose,’ Law Student Writes President Buhari

By Musa Isa

OPEN LETTER TO HIS EXCELLENCY, PRESIDENT MUHAMMADU BUHARI, GCFR. MR PRESIDENT SIR, YOU ARE NOT FIGHTING CORRUPTION, BUT CORRUPTION IS THRIVING UNDER YOUR NOSE

Thursday, May 19, 2022.

Dear Mr President,

May I remind you that you came to power at a time when Nigerians were fed up with the then ruling party, People’s Democratic Party, PDP as results of its overt misgovernance and unbridled corruption, impunity and callousness to the plights of Nigerians and lots more.

You came onboard at a time Nigerians were anxious to send former president Goodluck Jonathan packing from the Villa when it became clear that everything was going haywire under his watch.

So when you entered the 2015 presidential race with your triopodal points agenda namely; to fight against corruption and insecurity and creation of employment, be that Nigerians were at a crossroads desperately looking for a Messiah who would take them from the woods, so, they gave you their overwhelming votes.

Your Excellency, for the records, I never voted for you neither did vote for former president Goodluck Jonathan. My reasons were simple. I never saw you as a Democrat and as for GEJ, I saw him as man who was careless with power. So, I voted for Martin Onovo of the National Conscience Party and I never regretted it.

Mr President sir, in this letter to you I choose to address your inability to fight corruption because it was the loudest of your triopodal promises to Nigeria and Nigerians. Sadly, nor only do you fail to fight corruption but corruption becomes a thriving business under your watch as president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. With due respect Mr President, the APC government you lead is encouraging corruption to thrive thereby sending a clear signal that to be corrupt is not punishable but rewarding.

Examples are abound to justify the glaring fact that you support corruption. We saw how Council of State led by you, with ignoble audacity, granted presidential pardon to Joshua Dariye and Jolly Nyame former governors of Plateau and Taraba states respectively who were sentenced to different jail terms for stealing billions of Naira meant for the development of their states.

By the consequences of that single act, you wasted money and time expended in the criminal litigation that led to their convictions. I understand that Nigerian Constitution under S. 175 (1) empowers you to do so, but as a man with alleged zero tolerance for corruption, that single act gave you out completely.

Just recently, we saw how the police Authority promoted Ibrahim Magu to the rank of Assistant Inspector General of police. A man who was undergoing probe for allegations of corruption under presidential panel headed by Ayo Salami set up by your government- a probe whose outcome is not known to Nigerians till today. Again, this happened under your watch, and you told the world that you would fight corruption to a standstill.

Your Excellency sir, under your nose billions of our common wealth is being stolen by politicians with reckless abandon without dire consequences from institutions responsible for fighting corruption- the ICPC and the EFCC. Lately, these two institutions now major in arresting and parading of Yahoo Yahoo boys while they only specialize in inviting and granting liberal bail conditions to politicians having corruption allegations on their necks.

All these things are happening under your watch and yet, you told the world that you would fight against corruption. Mr President, you’re not fighting corruption at all!

Mr President, your ministers told Nigerians that there was no money to settle ASUU’S demands to enable Students return back to school, but your appointee in the person of Ahmed Idris, the embattled Accountant General of the Federation was able to steal a whopping sum of Eighty Billion Naira (8, 000, 000, 000) Naira.

What about Forty Seven Billions Naira ( 47, 000, 000, 000 ) allegedly stolen by Nsime Ekere, Ex NDDC Managing Director? Again, this happened under your watch. I can go on and on.

Sir, you’re not fighting corruption and corruption is not fighting back as your media advisers always tell Nigerians. Rather you’re supervising ethronment of corruption from all indications.

As a president of Nigeria, the buck stops on your table. You take commendation for a job well done. Just as you also take backlash for bad jobs. So, know now that Nigerians will remember you for how your government ends.

Fortunately your Excellency, you still have ample opportunity to redeem your image as a president who supervises ethronment of corruption while in office. You can commit the remaining part of tenure to that task. You have the choices to make to determine what posterity will remember you for. Make the choice now!

Your Excellency, permit me to leave you with immortal lines credited to Edmund Burke when he said, ” the only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing”.

POSTSCRIPT

Please settle ASUU’S demand so that Nigerian Students can go back to school. You have the presidential powers to do so. Please do, sir.

2023: Why I Did Not Interfere in APC Presidential Primary – Buhari

President Buhari on Saturday, said the process that led to the election of former Lagos State Governor, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu as the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) was purely democratic and a reflection of the will of party members.

According to a statement by his media aide, Malam Garba Shehu, Buhari said this during Sallah’s homage to the Emir of Katsina, Abdulmumini Kabir Usman.

“When the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) signaled parties to elect their presidential candidates, we had 30 aspirants, mostly ministers in my cabinet and governors,”

“I told each of the aspirants to go and do their best. One particular governor, in his wisdom, came to meet me and asked who they should vote for at the party convention, checking if I had a preferred candidate.

“There was no need for interference, knowing the competence of all the aspirants. They went and elected Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, and he picked his running mate, Sen. Kashim Ibrahim process in choosing our candidates for the 2023 elections. I am praying that we will have peaceful and successful elections,” he said.

President Buhari, who thanked Nigerians for their support for the APC in 2015, and 2019, said he had a rich experience in the 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015 presidential elections, travelling to all the 774 local councils in the country and in 2019 visiting 36 states.

“They say he who wants to serve should be ready for the responsibility of leadership. Three times I wanted this position and three times, I ended up at the Supreme Court. For that reason, in terms of experience, I have gathered a lot. I visited 774 local councils in 2003, 2007, 2011 and 2015.

“I feel privileged that Nigerians elected me in 2015. Since then, we have been doing our best to tackle the challenges, with God helping us. We are not alone. If only we knew what other countries in Africa are passing through, we would be grateful to God and protect our country. Other African countries are passing through a lot.

“As leaders, we are doing our best and will keep doing our best to improve the situation. I am praying that the Almighty God will give us more strength and wisdom to protect our people and fulfill our promises of ensuring wellbeing,” he said.

Buhari Has Done More Than US Govt in Infrastructure – Fashola

The Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola, has claimed that the Muhammadu Buhari-led federal government has done more than the government of the United States, in terms of infrastructure.

Fashola stated on Thursday in Kano, during the “APC conversation series”.

The series is the ruling party’s initiative of creating awareness on its achievements in the last seven years.

The Minister said, “I can assure you that the present APC administration of President Buhari has achieved what even the US government is trying to do in terms of infrastructure.

“As at December 2021, we have completed 941 kilometers of roads across all states and geopolitical zones.

“In Kano state here for instance, there are 21 road projects either in, around or in the neighbouring communities.

“Before APC administration, when last do you remember Federal Government completing 50 kilometer road in any part of the country?

“So, this is the positive change we promised Nigerians in 2015 and it is already happening. They say we are the same with them, but we are not. They stole money and took it abroad, but we are taking this money back and investing it in the area of infrastructure,” Fashola added.

He said presently, there are 850 ongoing projects under his ministry, including roads and bridges construction as well as houses in 34 states of the country.

BREAKING: I Can’t Release Nnamdi Kanu– Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari has said he cannot release detained leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, on his own.

The President said the embattled secession agitator must defend himself in court for peddling false information about his administration from overseas.

Buhari made this known while speaking on Channels Television on Wednesday night.

The President said, “There is one institution that I wouldn’t interfere with, that is judiciary, Kanu’s case is with the judiciary but what I wonder is when Kanu was safely in Europe, abusing this administration and mentioning too many things, I thought he wants to come and defend himself on the accusations.

“So, we are giving him an opportunity to defend himself in our system, not to be abusing us from Europe as if he was not a Nigerian. Let him come here with us and then criticise us here. Nigerians know that I don’t interfere with the judiciary, let him be listened to. But those who are saying that he should be released, no, we cannot release him.”

When asked for a possibility for political solution, Buhari said, “There is a possibility of political solution. If people behave themselves, all well and good but you can’t go to a foreign country and keep on sending incorrect economic and security problems against our country and thinking that you would not account for what you have been doing. Let him account for what he has been doing.”

Daily Report Nigeria earlier reported how Igbo elders led by Minister of Aviation in the First Republic, Chief Mbazulike Amaechi, visited the President in Aso Rock, requesting for the unconditional release of the IPOB leader.

President Buhari had told them he would consider their request, while insisting he would not want to interfere in the running of the judiciary.

2023 Election: PDP, LP Should Approach Court – Buhari

The President Muhammadu Buhari and president-elect, Bola Tinubu, has asked the Peoples Democratic Party and Labour Party to seek redress over their claims that Saturday’s presidential election was marred by rigging.

It will be recalled that the opposition parties during the collation of results called for the cancellation of the election and also asked the Independent National Electoral Commission Chairman, Mahmood Yakubu, to step down from his position over claims that the election was rigged in favour of the ruling party.

However, reacting to the claims in a statement on Wednesday, the President asked the opposition party to approach the court and prove their case.

If any candidate believes they can prove the fraud they claim is committed against them, then bring forward the evidence. If they cannot, then we must conclude that the election was indeed the people’s will – no matter how hard that may be for the losers to accept. If they feel the need to challenge, please take it to the courts, not to the streets.

“However, to do the latter means they are not doing it in the interest of the people, but rather to inflame, to put people in harm’s way and all for personal, selfish gains.

“After a degree of polarization that necessarily accompanies any election, it is now time to come together and act responsibly. I call on all candidates to remember the peace pledge they signed just days before the election. Do not undermine the credibility of INEC. Let us now move forward as one. The people have spoken,” Buhari said in a statement signed by his spokesman, Garba Shehu.

Also, the president-elect, Bola Ahmed Tinubu during his acceptance speech
urged his rivals not resort to violence but seek redress through court.

Political competition must now give way to political conciliation and inclusive governance.
During the election, you may have been my opponent but you were never my enemy. In my heart, you are my brothers.

“Still, I know some candidates will be hard put to accept the election results. It is your right to seek legal recourse. What is neither right nor defensible is for anybody to resort to violence.

“Any challenge to the electoral outcome should be made in a court of law, and not in the streets.
I also ask my supporters to let peace reign and tensions fade. We ran a principled, peaceful and progressive campaign. The aftermath of our campaign must be as benign.

“Yes, there are divisions amongst us that should not exist. Many people are uncertain, angry and hurt; I reach out to every one of you. Let the better aspects of our humanity step forward at this fateful moment. Let us begin to heal and bring calm to our nation.”

Senators, Reps Face Probe Over Illegal Budget Passage

The House of Representatives’ Committee on Public Accounts has confirmed the allegation by the President Muhammadu Buhari, that some committees of the National Assembly are passing budgets for ministries, departments and agencies of the Federal Government illegally.

It was gathered that the committee, after making the discovery, wrote to the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, Boss Mustapha, and the Clerk to the National Assembly, Amos Ojo, to confirm if Buhari actually transmitted the MDAs’ budget to the parliament or not.

The erring chairmen, who had been summoned by the committee earlier in the year, are billed to appear before the panel from this week.

The President is expected to transmit budgetary proposals of MDAs to the National Assembly, while the clerk transmits passed budgets to the Presidency for implementation.

However, Buhari, while laying the 2023 Appropriation Bill before a joint session of the National Assembly on October 7, 2022, slammed committees of the parliament who were bypassing him and approving budgets for government-owned enterprises without his approval.

“Distinguished Senators, Honourable Members, you may recall that we earlier integrated the budget of Government-Owned Enterprises into the FGN’s 2019 budget submission. This has helped to enhance the comprehensiveness and transparency of the FGN budget. It has, however, come to my attention that Government-Owned Enterprises liaise directly with relevant NASS committees to have their budget passed and issued to them directly, the President said,

“I would like to implore the leadership of the National Assembly to ensure that the budget I lay here today, which includes those of the GOEs, be returned to the Presidency when passed.

“The current practice where some committees of the National Assembly purport to pass budgets for GOEs, which are at variance with the budgets sanctioned by me, and communicate such directly to the MDAs, is against the rules and needs to stop.”

Chairman of the Committee on Public Accounts, Oluwole Oke, in an interview with newsmen, said chairmen of the erring committees had been queried on why they passed the budgets illegally.

When asked why the chairman had yet to appear before the committee, Oke said, “We are just resuming now. I am sure from next week, you will start seeing them appearing.”

The chairman added, “Before Mr President made that submission, we had written the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Clerk to the National Assembly to show us proof that these agencies’ budgets passed through the normal legislative processes. The Public Accounts Committee (of the House) raised the alarm.”

When asked whether his committee would be thorough with the probe as fellow lawmakers were involved, Oke
noted that the lawmakers on the panel were only accountable to Nigerians.

“The Public Accounts Committee is a committee created by the Constitution. Why wouldn’t we? We are accountable to Nigerians. If we were not going to be fair, do you think we would have raised the alarm or issue such a resolution?”

In an interview on Thursday with the Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Buhari lamented that his age is telling on him, while declaring he has given his best for the country.

Nigeria to End kerosene Usage by 2030 – Buhari

President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday announced the federal government’s plan to junk kerosene by 2030 when gas supply would have been total.
