OMPADEC more effective than NDDC – Arerebo

A activist, Ambassador Arerebo Yerinmene has called for the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) to be reverted back to the Oil Mineral Producing Areas Development Commission (OMPADEC).

Arerebo faulted the structure of the NDDC board, saying all officers have no clear understanding of their roles and obligations.

The National Coordinator of the Ijaw Interest Advocates (IIA) argued that the lack of clarity of roles has led to a grave infighting among officials in the NDDC.

Suggesting a solution to the scenario, Arerebo said a reversal to OMPADEC will ease the tensions and cause efficiency in the Commission.

He said:

“I am beginning to understand something new in NDDC, as the way the place is structured or formed is not working.

“The MD, EDFA, EDP, and the board are critically faulty. The demarcations are only on paper in the NDDC act but practically not working.

“There is no clear definition of roles or hierarchy among the executive directors and the board, hence they end up spending valuable time fighting themselves, forgetting their responsibility to develop the region.

“For the fact that, from inception no one is held accountable as non is more superior to the other administratively, they frustrate the efforts of each other, carry all the money to get powers to suppress each other, which is also happening in the present board.

“On the above premise, I will advise that the;

“1. NDDC should be taken back to the OMPADEC structure where one man, which is the executive chairman (must not be a politician), basically run the affairs of the commission with the state representatives.

“2. The states will have their budgets as per the oil production quota.

“3.The chairman should oversee and ensure the state representative adhere to their state budgets.

“With the above, the people in the oil producing communities will know who to be held responsible if they fail to deliver their states.

“The issue of infighting that has taken the centre stage in NDDC year in year out will be checked largely. More so, the Abuja interference will also be reduced as they are a major hindrance to the commission towards the development of the Niger Delta region.”
