The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has confirmed that a heavy thunderstorm on the night of September 3, 2025, caused the collapse of its 132kV Otukpo–Nsukka–New Haven transmission line.
The company reported that a conductor fell near Tower 97 along the line, sparking a fire that destroyed a residential building constructed beneath the transmission line, razed a car parked within the Right of Way, and killed two cows grazing nearby. Thankfully, no human lives were lost.

Following the incident, TCN’s Enugu Regional Manager, Engr. Tom Inugonum, led a team to the site for inspection, while the Quick Response Line Maintenance crew immediately commenced dismantling the affected section to prepare for restringing new conductors.
Despite the damage, power supply to Nsukka remained unaffected. TCN explained that bulk electricity is currently being routed through the Otukpo 132kV Transmission Substation to the Enugu Electricity Distribution Company to ensure uninterrupted service.
Expressing relief that there were no human casualties, the company emphasized that the incident highlights the dangers of encroaching on high-voltage line corridors. “This serves as a stark reminder of the critical need to avoid building, parking, or engaging in any activities within the transmission lines’ Right of Way,” TCN warned.
The company appealed to residents to strictly observe safety rules around electricity facilities, reiterating its commitment to protecting lives, property, and maintaining grid stability.
