President Bola Tinubu has expressed strong disapproval of the recent stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja that claimed the lives of over 60 people, blaming the organizers for the deadly incidents.

In a media chat on Monday, Tinubu described the fatal stampedes as a “very grave error,” urging that proper planning and organization are critical in such events.

“It is a very grave error on the part of the organizers,” Tinubu stated. He emphasized the need for responsible conduct when handling public distribution events, particularly those aimed at helping the less privileged.

The president also shared his personal experience, stating that he had been involved in giving out palliatives at his Bourdillon residence for the past 25 years without encountering such disasters.

“I’ve been giving to the less privileged at Bourdillon for the past 25 years, we’ve never experienced a stampede,” he said, adding that it is important for organizers to avoid publicizing events they are not adequately prepared to handle.

Tinubu’s remarks followed reports of a tragic stampede in Abuja, where at least 10 people, including four children, were killed during a food distribution event at the Holy Trinity Catholic Church in Maitama.

In the wake of the incident, the Federal Capital Territory Police Command confirmed the fatalities, which added to the growing number of casualties from similar events across the country.

“Condolences to those who lost a family member. It is good to give, but if you know you don’t have enough to give, do not publicize it,” Tinubu added, calling for more caution and better management of such humanitarian efforts.
