President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the Chief of Defence Staff, General Christopher Musa, to take immediate action to curb the menace of crude oil theft and vandalism in the Niger Delta region.

This directive is targetted at boosting oil production in the country and addressing a national issue that has become a major concern.

“The president has directed the CDS to take control of the crisis we are having in the Niger Delta operational area. Oil theft and pipeline vandalism have become a national issue, and the president has directed the CDS to contend this within the shortest possible time,” said Mele Kyari, Group Executive Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL).

General Musa vowed to eliminate all acts of vandalism and criminal activities in the South-South region, saying, “We are promising Nigerians that henceforth, the entire South-South will be cleared of any acts of vandalism or criminality within the general area.”

The operation will be a joint effort between security agencies, and General Musa called on host communities to trust and support the security agencies. “We need the communities to understand that pipeline vandalism and all the hazards being caused are also affecting them directly,” he said.
