President Bola Tinubu on Tuesday transmitted a formal letter to the Senate seeking the screening and confirmation of newly appointed service chiefs to head Nigeria’s military hierarchy.
The letter, read during plenary by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, detailed the names and positions of the nominees expected to lead the armed forces.
New Military Line-Up
According to the President’s letter, the nominees are:
General Olufemi Oluyede – Chief of Defence Staff
Major-General Waheedi Shaibu – Chief of Army Staff

Rear Admiral Idi Abbas – Chief of Naval Staff
Air Vice Marshal Kennedy Aneke – Chief of Air Staff
Major-General Emmanuel Undiendeye – Chief of Defence Intelligenc
Senator Akpabio announced that the nominees have been referred to the Senate Committee of the Whole for screening and confirmation. The exercise, he said, will be conducted next week in line with legislative procedures.
The request comes as the administration continues efforts to reposition the security sector amid ongoing challenges of insurgency, kidnapping, and banditry across parts of the country.
Once confirmed, the service chiefs will assume full operational authority over Nigeria’s defence and security apparatus.
