1. University of Ibadan: Pioneering Excellence

As Nigeria’s oldest federal university, the University of Ibadan (UI) has a rich heritage. Established in 1948, UI is located in the western region of Nigeria, just five miles away from Ibadan, Oyo State. The university boasts notable affiliations such as the Academic Staff Union of Universities, Association of African Universities, National Universities Commission, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities.

2. Covenant University (CU): Nurturing Leaders

As a privately-owned Christian institution, Covenant University, founded in 2002, stands as a beacon of academic excellence. Situated in Ota, Ogun State, CU has earned its reputation through scholarly citations, rankings, and JAMB statistics. Affiliated with the Association of African Universities, Living Faith Church Worldwide, National Universities Commission, and the Association of Commonwealth Universities, CU emphasizes its motto, “Raising a New Generation of Leaders.” Notably, Dr. David Oyedepo serves as the chancellor, while Prof. AAA Atayero assumes the role of vice-chancellor.

3. University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN): Restoring Dignity

Established in 1955, the publicly owned University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), carries a legacy that upholds its motto, “To Restore the Dignity of Man.” With campuses in Nsukka town, Enugu State, UNN is recognized as the premier indigenous university in Nigeria, based on the American educational system. The university comprises fifteen faculties, housing a total of 102 academic departments. UNN, founded by Nnamdi Azikiwe, offers a wide range of programs, including 211 postgraduate and 82 undergraduate programs. The university celebrated its 50th anniversary in October 2010.

Located in the urban city of Lagos, the University of Lagos (UNILAG) stands as a prominent publicly owned research institution. Established in 1962, UNILAG emphasizes its motto, “Indeed and in Truth.” Affiliated with the Association of Commonwealth Universities, National Universities Commission, Association of African Universities, and the Academic Staff Union of Universities, UNILAG prides itself on its dedicated academic and administrative staff.

5. Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU): A Legacy of Education

Formerly known as the University of Ife, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) was established in 1961. This public institution, situated in Ile-Ife, Osun State, holds historical significance as the first university in the western region of Nigeria. In 1987, it was renamed in honor of the late Obafemi Awolowo, the esteemed first premier leader of Nigeria. OAU offers a conducive learning environment within an ancient city.

6. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU): Shaping Minds

Founded in 1962, Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) was formerly known as the University of Northern Nigeria.
