A petrol tanker on Thursday crashed into a crowd of school children, killing an unconfirmed number of pupils in Effurun, Uvwie local government area of Delta state.

The tanker said to be conveying premium motor spirit reportedly lost balance along the NPA Expressway and fell on the pupils, who were waiting for transport vehicles by the roadside.

According to eyewitnesses, a minimum of eleven pupils were confirmed dead on the spot, including four children of the same parents.

Other sources further alleged that the number of casualties may have risen to twenty school children as more bodies were being evacuated.

The driver of the tanker escaped being mobbed by soldiers assigned to the Effurun Army Barrack, where the sad incident occured.

The incident has since left residents in the area in rude shock.
