According to The PUNCH, the incident happened on January 23, 2026, at about 5:00 p.m. in Gauza village, Jahun Local Government Area of Jigawa State.
Confirming the development in a statement issued to journalists in Dutse, the state capital, the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Shi’isu Adam, said the deceased ate lunch at home before he suddenly became seriously ill.
“The man was rushed to the hospital for medical attention but was pronounced dead while receiving treatment,” SP Adam said.
Following the incident, detectives from the Jahun Police Division launched an investigation and arrested the wife of the deceased as the prime suspect.
SP Adam disclosed that during interrogation, the suspect confessed to poisoning her husband’s food with rat poison.
“The suspect admitted that she poisoned the food and claimed she sent her cousin to purchase the rat poison used,” he stated.
The police spokesperson further revealed that the suspect told investigators she was forced into the marriage by her parents, a situation she claimed pushed her into committing the act.
Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police in Jigawa State has ordered that the case be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse for a thorough investigation.
SP Adam said the suspect would be charged to court after the investigation is concluded.
The police command also urged the public to remain calm and law-abiding, advising families and couples to seek lawful and peaceful ways to resolve marital issues.
“Taking the law into one’s hands often leads to irreversible consequences,” the statement warned.
