Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), has revealed how his parents, Eze Israel Okwu Kanu and Lolo Ugoeze Sally Nmeme Okwu Kanu, died due to trauma from a 2017 army attack on his home.

According to Kanu, the trauma from the attack led to their deaths five years ago.

In a statement issued by his lead counsel, Aloy Ejimakor, Kanu recalled the events of September 2017, when soldiers under Operation Python Dance invaded his residence in Afaraukwu, Abia State. Kanu escaped and fled to Europe, but his parents were severely traumatized by the incident.

“Five years ago today, I lost my precious parents. They suffered severe trauma from which they never recovered, while 28 other innocent souls were killed, simply because the Nigerian Army, without provocation, launched a deadly assault on our royal home with the sole intention of killing me,” Kanu said.

He lamented that those responsible for his parents’ deaths are still walking free, and vowed to continue fighting for Biafra’s independence.

“The Abuja-based murderers and their accomplices in Igboland who ordered this heinous, cold-blooded massacre of these innocent souls are still peddling their lies against my legitimate right to freely agitate for Biafra, as recognised by the laws of Nigeria,” Kanu added.
