From the latest reports, Twitter accounts belonging to former US President “Barrack Obama”, Bill Gates, Jeff Bezos, Kanye West, Elon Musk, and several other prominent personalities were on Wednesday hacked.
The unknown hackers posted tweets that seem to promote cryptocurrency fraud.
The various Twitter accounts along with Kim Kardashian West, Warren Buffet, Mike Bloomberg, posted similar tweets soliciting cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) donations to their verified handles.
The tweet reads;
“Everyone is asking me to give back, and now is the time,” Gates’ tweet said, promising to double all payments to a Bitcoin address for the next 30 minutes.”
Meanwhile Twitter’s support handle has said that it was aware of the cyber security threats and impersonation, and that it’s doing everything possible to resolve and fix it.
A little while after the cyber attack, Twitter moved to prevent verified accounts holder from tweeting. However, the non-verified were not affected.
This is arguably the most significant security incident in Twitter’s history.
Recall from 2019, saw Twitter’s CEO, Jack Dorsey account also hacked, raising concerns if Twitter is really safe from cyber threats.
