Global powers react with alarm as Iran vows fierce retaliation, raising fears of regional war.
The United States military has bombed three of Iran’s key nuclear sites — Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan — in a coordinated strike that has shaken global diplomacy and intensified the crisis in the Middle East.
According to U.S. President Donald Trump, who addressed the nation shortly after the operation, the strikes were necessary to “neutralise imminent threats posed by Iran’s nuclear capabilities.” The bombing was reportedly carried out using B-2 stealth bombers armed with Massive Ordnance Penetrators (MOPs), alongside submarine-launched Tomahawk missiles.

Sites Hit by Precision Strikes
Fordow Fuel Enrichment Plant (FFEP), located near Qom, was one of the primary targets. The underground facility, long suspected by Western intelligence to be key to Iran’s nuclear ambitions, reportedly sustained heavy damage.
Natanz, considered Iran’s largest uranium enrichment facility in Isfahan Province, was hit next. Satellite imagery reviewed after the attack shows severe structural destruction.
Isfahan Nuclear Technology Center, which handles uranium conversion and research, was also bombed. Reports confirmed plumes of smoke and widespread damage to the facility.
Trump Justifies Strike, Iran Promises Retaliation
President Trump called the airstrikes a “spectacular military success,” stating they were conducted in concert with Israel, which has recently come under missile fire from Iran-backed militants.
“These nuclear sites were not just a threat to Israel but to the peace and security of the entire world,” he said.
Iran’s Foreign Ministry responded with a sharply-worded statement condemning the attacks, vowing retaliation, and maintaining that its nuclear programme is for peaceful energy development.
Fears of Wider War as Global Leaders React
UN Secretary-General António Guterres urged restraint and warned the situation could spiral into a regional war. The European Union has called for an emergency UN Security Council meeting. Russia and China slammed the U.S. action as “reckless.”
Israel, on the other hand, praised the strike, calling it “bold and necessary.”
Regional Fallout and Global Impact
Military experts believe Iran may now activate proxy forces in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq, and Yemen. Missile and drone attacks on U.S. bases and Israeli cities are considered highly likely in the coming hours.
The immediate economic fallout was felt on global markets. Oil prices surged past $95 per barrel, raising concerns over fuel price inflation and currency volatility — especially in countries like Nigeria.
The rising cost of crude is expected to affect Nigeria’s inflation, worsen foreign exchange instability, and put pressure on the fuel subsidy regime.
Legal and Constitutional Tensions in the U.S.
Inside the United States, the strike has stirred political controversy. Legal scholars and members of Congress have questioned whether President Trump overstepped his authority by authorising military action without Congressional approval.
Although no immediate signs of radiation leaks have been reported, nuclear watchdogs have raised concerns about long-term environmental and safety risks due to the bombing of enrichment and conversion sites.
