The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has welcomed the Abuja Federal High Court ruling halting the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP)’s planned national convention, describing it as a judgment that has brought down impunity within the party.

Justice James Omotosho, in his verdict on Friday, restrained the PDP from holding its 2025 National Convention until it fully complies with the provisions of its constitution and the Electoral Act.

The court also barred the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting or recognising any outcome of a convention held in violation of party rules and statutory procedures.

Speaking to concerned PDP stakeholders from 12 states and the FCT, Wike described the ruling as a bittersweet development — one that exposes the rot within the party’s leadership.

“We are happy that we have fought impunity, while on another part we are not happy with what is going on in the party. It’s unfortunate that the so-called purported national convention cannot hold; it has never been bad like this in the Peoples Democratic Party,” he said.

The former Rivers State governor criticised certain leaders for what he called arrogance and disregard for loyal members who had sacrificed for the survival of the PDP.

He said such attitudes had plunged the once-dominant opposition party into chaos.

Wike, who has been at the centre of internal resistance against the party’s leadership, urged members to “continue to stand for the truth” and not allow personal ambition to destroy the collective interest of the PDP.
