The crisis in the region escalated after reports of missile exchanges involving Iran and the United States, with Iran reportedly targeting strategic locations in retaliation for coordinated attacks linked to the US and Israel.
“Qatar’s air defence systems successfully intercepted incoming missiles as part of a pre-approved security plan,” confirmed the nation’s Ministry of Defence.
As a safety precaution, Qatar, along with neighboring countries, temporarily closed their airspace, leaving expatriates, travellers, and professional athletes; including Qatar Stars League players stranded.
Troost-Ekong had just embarked on a new chapter in his career after his January transfer from Saudi Arabia, but the escalating tensions have disrupted both travel and football schedules.
The ongoing situation highlights the vulnerability of international sports professionals amid geopolitical crises, with athletes often caught far from home when conflicts arise.
