Hosts, Qatar suffered an opening defeat to Ecuador at the ongoing FIFA World Cup.

Ecuador captain, Enner Valencia scored a quick double in the first half to secure three points for the South Americans.

The experienced striker opened the scoring from the penalty spot on 16th minute after being brought down by Qatari goalkeeper, Saad Alsheeb.

The goal meant the match was the first time a FIFA World Cup opening goal was scored from the penalty spot.

Valencia, who had a goal rightly disallowed for offside early on in the game, rose highest to head home a cross from Angelo Preciado.

The hosts had a lot of hopes going into the game but fell short with a sloppy performance at Al Bayt Stadium.

Qatar have also become the first host team to lose an opening game at any World Cup.
