Also, the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in Delta State, Olorogun Kenneth Gbagi poured cold water on the purported death of Gowon.

Gbagi described the reports as the “handiwork of mischief makers.”

The general served as head of state of Nigeria from 1966 to 1975, and presided over the infamous Nigerian Civil War.

Born in October 1934, Gowon hails from Lur, a small village in the present Kanke Local Government Area of Plateau State.

He joined the Nigerian Army in 1954 and was trained at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst in England. He rose to the rank of general in 1966.
