ZECO Releases Timetable, Guidelines, Form Fees For IYC Western Zone Elections

The Zonal Electoral Committee of the Ijaw Youth Council, Western Zone, has released the timetable for the forthcoming elections in the zone.

According to the timetable signed by Comrades Emmanuel Akpule and Icon-James Tam, ZECO Chairman and Secretary respectively, the elections will hold on June 8, 2024 at a yet to be announced venue.

ZECO also announced form fees for all offices with that of Chairman pegged at N100,000, while Vice Chairman and Secretary priced at N80,000, among others.

On the other hand, the Committee released guidelines for the election as stated below;

ELECTORAL GUIDELINES

A. ELIGIBILITY

  1. Aspirant into any office MUST be an indigene of any of the Ijaw clans within the zone either maternally or paternally.

  2. Must at least possess a secondary school certificate (WAEC or NECO).

  3. Must tender proof of payment of dues for at least three years.

  4. He/she must not be a member of any secret cult.

  5. Aspirant must tender birth certificate/declaration of age and local government of origin certificate.

  6. Aspirant seeking for students Representative must show proof of studentship. (A valid student ID card.

  7. Aspirant holding previous office must resign at least a month before the election, with proof of resignation attached to other documents.

  8. He/she must not be more than 45 years of age.

  9. Aspirant must attach Two (2) recent passport photographs to their forms.

B. NOMINATION

  1. Aspirant must enjoy the endorsement of at least TWO members of council in each of the component states of the zone, DELTA, EDO, & ONDO States.

  2. Endorsements must be in form of name, phone number & signatures.

C. SUBMISSION OF DELEGATE LIST

  1. Each Kingdom/Clan listed and recognized by the constitution of the Ijaw Youth Council, in Western Zone shall be entitled to three (3) delegates which MUST include one FEMALE.

  2. Delegates list must be endorsed by

I. Chairman and Secretary

II. Two recognised Leaders of Council from that Clan.

  1. Delegates MUST be financial members of council with up-to-date payment of dues.

D. ELECTION

  1. The aspirant with the HIGHEST number of votes for a position shall be declared and returned as WINNER.

  2. In case of a tie for a position, the outgoing

Zonal Executives who did not resign to contest in the ongoing election shall be made to vote to decide a winner.

  1. Aspirants SHALL submit an AGENT who shall represent him at the collation of result. Such person must be a member of council.

  2. The agent shall sign the result sheet on behalf of the aspirant He/She represents.

  3. Elections shall be by open secret ballot.

  4. Delegates shall be educated on how to vote at the election venue before voting commences.

E. ANNOUNCEMENT/DECLARATION OF RESULTS

  1. The Chairman of the ZECO shall announce

the results of elections into the various offices.

  1. Upon the declaration of results, the chairman of ZECO shall proceed to issue certificate of

return to winners.

F. SWEARING-IN

  1. The elected executive members shall immediately be sworn-in at the venue, after issuance of certificate of return.
