  • The group also claimed that over N21 billion was extorted from the people of the South-East within the same period,

  • Corrupt security officials and kidnappers were being the main perpetrators.

A civil rights group, International Society for Civil Liberties and Rule of Law (Intersociety), has made shocking allegations against security agencies and non-state actors in the South-East region of Nigeria.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the group claimed that at least 180 people were killed within December 2024 and January 2025, while over N21 billion was extorted from the people of the region within the same period.

According to Intersociety, the killings, abductions, and disappearances were aimed at violently seizing and pocketing billions of Naira, particularly during the Christmas and New Year celebrations.

Intersociety claimed that the Uga Junction and Atani Road Naval checkpoints were the most “lucrative” in the South-East, with N600 million seized at gunpoint and criminally pocketed in two months.

The group also alleged that kidnappers seized N600 million from defenseless abductees in 20 days, and N1.2 billion in two months.
