7 Uncommon Uses of Boiling Water At Home

Apart from boiling water to cook pasta and brew tea, you can also use hot water in your home in amazing and effective ways.

Below are seven effective ways to use boiling water around your house.

1. Destroy Weeds.

This is an economical and environmentally friendly way to prevent pesky weeds from growing through cracks in the sidewalk.

USAGE

Just boil the water and pour it immediately (and liberally) onto the weeds, which you can pull out when the water cools. If the treatment doesn’t work the first time (obviously this is more common with longer-rooted weeds, such as dandelion or thistle), grab another pot and start working again.

2. Shine of Tarnished Silver. Boiling water could polish silver that has lost its luster.

USAGE

Just take an aluminum pan or line an enameled pan with foil and add baking soda, salt, and vinegar. Then pour in some boiling water before adding the tarnished bits.

3. Removing Bad Smells.

Cooking smells can linger longer than you would like, which combined with smelly garbage or dirty dishes only makes the situation worse.

USAGE
Try eliminating bad smells in the kitchen by boiling a pot of water with citrus peel on the stove. You can even add sweet spices like cinnamon, cloves, and anise.

4. Remove Microwave Spatter.

Do you have a dirty microwave? The boiling water is said to dilute the dirt and make it easier to wipe off.

USAGE

Simply boil about a cup of water in the microwave (ideally in a wide-mouthed bowl to release as much steam as possible) and then when the microwave fills with steam, take a minute to dry everything. You can also try adding a spent lemon or a few tablespoons of lemon juice as the acid will help remove grease and dirt.

5. Clear Clogged Drains.

While harsh chemicals can be an effective tool for cleaning clogged drains, they also pose the risk of pipe corrosion.

USAGE

Try pouring boiling water down the drain instead of store-bought cleaning supplies. Only use boiling water if you have metal pipes. For PVC pipe, use hot but not boiling water instead.

6. Remove Stains.

Hot water is not suitable for protein stains such as blood and other body fluids as it can set them on the fabric. But for some food stains like berries and grapes, boiling water can be life-saving (depending on the tissue affected, of course).

USAGE
To wash a stained garment with boiling water, soak the stained area in a pan of hot water until the stain disappears. Should strawberries, raspberries, blueberries, or any other fruit remain on the upholstery or carpet, pour some boiling water over the affected area and mop up any excess water with a sponge.

7. Descale Kettles.

Limescale and limescale build-up on coffee pots and teapots over time – this is normal.

USAGE

Limescale is easily removed by boiling equal parts water and white vinegar, then simply allowing the mixture to cool and rinse off the dirt.
