The Supreme Court in Colorado has disqualified former President Donald Trump from running in the 2024 presidential election in the United States (US).

The court ruled that Trump’s disqualification was due to his involvement in the 2021 assault on the Capitol.

The court also ordered that his name should not appear on the state’s primary ballot.

While the decision is specific to Colorado, similar legal actions are being considered in other states.

The court said:

“A majority of the court holds that President Trump is disqualified from holding the office of President under Section Three of the Fourteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution.

“Because he is disqualified, it would be a wrongful act under the Election Code for the Colorado Secretary of State to list him as a candidate on the presidential primary ballot.

“We do not reach these conclusions lightly.”

The four-three majority decision by the Colorado court prompted Trump’s camp to announce their intent to appeal.

Checks revealed the landmark ruling, utilizing Section 3 of the 14th Amendment, marks the first time a presidential candidate has been disqualified for engaging in insurrection.
